The Brazilian Association of Cinematography (ABC) groups together professionals from cinema and audiovisual media, organizes events, and disseminates information about the sector.
The Brazilian Cinematography Association (Associação Brasileira de Cinematografia, ABC), founded on January 2, 2000, gathers Brazilian audiovisual professionals with the purpose of encouraging the exchange of ideas and information to democratize and improve the technical and artistic expansion of these departments.
Today we gather more than 450 professionals and carry out a series of activities. Through a forum, exclusively for members, the ABC Session, ABC Award, ABC Week and ABC Newsletter sent to about 2 thousand subscribers, the goal is to encourage conversations and exchange of information about the craft in addition to resources on technical and artistic tools.
In collaboration with other publishers, ABC also issues works relevant to cinematography, such as the book “Expor uma História” by Ricardo Aronovich. The association is one of the founders of the Brazilian Cinema Congress and is a member of IMAGO (International Federation of Cinematographers) and FELAFC (La Federación de Autores de Fotografía Cinematográfica) ABC also collaborates with technical studies which seek to improve the quality of projections in the country, and its Technical Recommendations were adopted by ANCINE in the installation of new rooms.
Since 2002, Semana ABC (ABC Week) has promoted conferences, panels and debates, which gathers professionals from different areas of the industry, from Brazil and abroad, as well as film students and other interested professionals. The event discusses current issues, news and updates in the Brazilian industry and addresses work innovations happening here and around the world. After the ABC Week, the entire programming is made available on our YouTube channel. One of the great moments of the event is the ABC Award ceremony, which concludes the Week of events.
A free monthly event, the ABC Session screens selected films in the presence of the main technicians involved in the production, who, after the screening, participate in a Q&A with the public.
ABC still works in the area of copyright, following the trend of recognizing the legal rights of co-authorship in audiovisual works in the same way that has already occurred in some European countries.
Improving the day-to-day relationships between the associates, our Association – today the largest of its kind in the country – plans an organic growth, with an emphasis on the quality of its staff, to provide better technical, artistic and ethical qualifications to the professionals in the Brazilian audiovisual industry.
